Rossdale E-News – 7 August 2019
Meet the Team!
Our final staff member to be introduced is club General Manager, Andrew Noonan. Andrew was first introduced to Rossdale 25 years ago by his Grandparents, Tom and Merle Noonan. His grandfather, Tom (pictured), was a club employee that was working in the Pro Shop at the time. A cheerful member, Tom would bring Andrew to the club each day after school where a hobby would soon become a passion.
Since then, Andrew has proudly represented Rossdale Golf Club in Amateur golf for over 20 years achieving various individual honours along the way. These include becoming a two time member of the Victorian Junior State team and a NCAA Division 1 scholarship recipient in 2004. Notably, Andrew has twice finished in the top 3 in State Championships. Once fiercely competitive on the golf course, Andrew has won 5 Rossdale Club Championships and been a member of 4 victorious pennant teams. During this period Andrew would develop a friendship with current course superintendent, Travis Stillman. Impressed with the way Travis would lead and manage the Pennant Teams, Andrew knew he was the perfect candidate if the superintendent role were made available. “It wasn’t just that he was highly qualified and a great clubman. Both those things are obvious. Travis was and continues to be a great leader, a trait that I had come to admire in him”, Andrew explained on reflection.
A local St Bede’s student, Andrew started his career in the hospitality and entertainment industry. Along the way meeting current club employees Gerard Ryan, Patrick Bowring and Kacey Byrne. “The best chef’s and front of house operator I have ever met in my twenty years’ experience… and I’ve met a few” Andrew is quoted. During this period a passion for events, entertainment and marketing would lead him to the Collingwood Football Club, where he would become a senior hospitality manager. During this time, Andrew would complete a Bachelor of Business at Swinburne University and learnt intimately the cultural characteristics of one of Australia’s great sporting clubs. More recently, Andrew continues to pursue these passions by enrolling to complete an MBA (Master of Business Administration) at the highly reputable Monash Business School.
Shortly after his grandfather’s passing, Andrew made the difficult decision to leave Collingwood and “return home” to continue his association with Rossdale as the General Manager. “It’s rare to work in a place that you have grown up in and can take so much pride in. I’m as proud as ever in representing the members both on and off the course. The team we have assembled has achieved some much in such a short period of time here at Rossdale and that should make everyone excited by what the future holds”.
We think that sums up our General Manager pretty well.

From The Captain
Many members would be aware that the golf course has had its fair share of stress in the past 12 months. Since scarifying and a prolonged period of very dry weather the fairways have had a tough time. With winter slowing down growth some areas of the fairways can appear brown/bare despite the root system being healthy. We expect the fairways to improve as the ground temperature rises over the coming weeks.
Currently the grounds staff are working hard to present the golf course each week in very playable condition but as members we can do a lot more to assist. Divots on the fairways are being left unfilled. Please ensure that your sand bucket you carry is used often. If you see a divot please fill it! Plug marks on the greens cannot repair themselves and a divot tool is not an expensive item to have in your pocket.
You may have noticed ropes and staked areas are in place to protect zones. Please do not remove ropes or stakes as they immovable obstructions, relief may be taken under rule 16.1(a).
With the approaching spring and a promising growing season ahead, please look after the ground you play on and appreciate the work that the ground staff are doing. The course team recently finished renovating all bunkers on the course, so please be sure to rake them after you play out of them. The upcoming weeks will be spent paying attention to the teeing areas and surrounds. The course team will be edging, weeding and levelling paths as well as maintaining surrounding garden beds.
Thank you and happy golfing.
