ENEWS – 4th July

Firstly, thank you very much to the Wednesday ladies for inviting me to join them on day 3 of my tenure, it was an absolute pleasure. One of my biggest takeaways was the way in which our ladies approach their golf. They’re an extremely competitive group who demonstrate genuine respect for their playing group and our club with a stringent adherence to the rules of golf, something we should always strive to do.  

Apart from the one degree temperature on arrival it was a fun day which finished with a lovely meal and glass of wine. Special thanks to Jenny Howe for circulating the picture of me hitting from the ladies’ tees, you’ll keep!

On Saturday we celebrated Vic Wotherspoon’s final week as captain. I personally want to thank Vic for agreeing to join the board all those years ago and for his amazing service to the club. On behalf of the members and club staff, Vic was presented with a small gift pack which included the beanie depicted below (being Scottish Vic loves free stuff).

Lastly, thank you very much to the many of you who have sent me messages in support of my appointment as the new Club Captain. I’m very honored to have this responsibility bestowed upon me.  It is also my great pleasure to welcome Jason Bulner to the role of Vice Captain. 

We are both very cognizant of the job ahead and want to assure members that together we will work hard to build on the high standards set by our predecessors.

The sad unexpected passing of Dorothy Heath.

Dorothy was a member for 14 years, she played Interclub and caddied for pennant.  She had a bad fall a few years ago damaging her ankle leaving her unable to play golf, which she loved.  She always had a happy face and was often seen wearing the colour purple, her favorite.  Sadly missed.

The 2024 Winter Shield semi-finals delivered thrilling golf under pristine conditions, though not without a slight hiccup. A perfect day for golf unfolded at the picturesque course, with clear skies and crisp air enhancing the excitement. However, an early morning frost delay pushed the start time back, building anticipation among players and spectators alike.

In the first semi-final, the formidable duo of Tricia. Stillman and Judy. Webb faced off against Judy. Davis and Anneke Thomson. Despite Judy and Anneke determined efforts, Tricia and Judy demonstrated exceptional synergy and skill, clinching the match 2&1. Their strategic play and consistent performance were the highlights, with Judy sinking a crucial putt on the 17th to secure their victory.

The second semi-final was a nail-biter, as Bern Terrell and Sue Hill took on Maureen O’Flaherty and Anne Stannard. The match saw intense back-and-forth action, with both teams showcasing remarkable resilience and talent. Bern and Sue, however, managed to edge out their opponents, winning 1UP. The decisive moment came on the 18th green, where Sue’s composed approach shot set them up for a par, sealing their place in the finals.

The day, though starting with a frosty delay, ended with heart-pounding action, setting the stage for an exciting Winter Shield final!
